Following ancient written scrolls, the newer technology of the codex had turnable pages. Instead of reading from beginning to end, you can access any of the information. Written down by anonymous musicians in the 1400s some of the first music for keyboard instruments appears in Codex Faenza. Much of it is based on older vocal music -- arranged, embellished, and modernized for keyboard. The player discovers many details of the music's rhythm and phrase organization. Although written 500 years later, Terry Riley's Keyboard Studies similarly depend on the player choosing how to combine and realize the elements at each moment.
